Hello Gardeners! We're in the heat of August!

Event Recap:
Partner Volunteer Event: Crown Pointe Academy and Rose Roots Community Garden
What a productive morning we had at Rose Roots this week! The Garden benefitted from some helping hands thanks to an event with Crown Pointe Academy. It was a teaching day at the garden with about 60 volunteers learning about composting, our bindweed mite experiment, weeding, and mulching. The teachers created 30 wonderful “Water me” and "Pick for Veggie Van” signs which we’ll use for many years to come.
The teachers also raised $1,200 for a garden donation. This is so appreciated. We will be sure to put the funds to good use at the garden. All in all, what a great day, capped off with a shared lunch buffet. Hope we can make this an annual event.
Accomplishments in the garden included composting, weeding along the fence line, and weeding in the south pollinator garden. The volunteers also spruced up the west side by watering and deadheading perennials in the pollinator beds and trough planters, weeding the paths, removing bindweed around the trees and shrubs, and adding mulch.
COMING UP NEXT! Lettuce turnip the beet! Don't miss the bluegrass band The Hummin'birds at the Garden. Sunday August 17th at 6:30pm.
Donations are Going Strong for the Veggie Van
We're at 267.3 lbs of Vegetables so far!
Have you donated carrots to the van this year? A little bird tells us that a child who received them couldn't stop talking about how they were the best he'd ever tasted. Your donation could really mean a lot to someone! The non-profit Veggie Van picks up every Sunday and Thursday at 10:00 am from the red barn on the West end.
We ask each gardener donate 20% of their harvest to those in need:
Put your donations in the barn fridge in time for pick up.
Going on vacation? Plant one of the new "Pick Me for the Veggie Van" signs along with your Water Me sign so that others know they can harvest your plot for the Veggie Van.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! We still need you! If you can take the lead on watching for vacationers' Harvest Thyme and "Pick Me for the Veggie Van" please email leadership@roserootsgarden.org. We need a team-lead to ensure useable veggies don't go to waste when they could be harvested while plot holders are on holiday. Our goal is zero waste, so this is an important role!
New East Side Compost Bin
Have you seen the fabulous new compost bin on the east side? It's courtesy of local Eagle Scout, Corgan, with a helping hand from some of our leadership team, including: Patty Sacks, Julie Gleason, Jim Richards, and Jack Daniel Nix. Corgan lives close to the garden and loves being outside. In the past he's had the opportunity, through his church, to help at the garden with weeding and cleaning up, so he was excited to plan and build the bins as his Eagle Scout Project.
DONATIONS NEEDED! The garden still needs pavers as we work to make it easier to mow the compost piles. If you can donate pavers, or funds, please email leadership@roserootsgarden.org.
Refreshments in the Works
Have you checked out the far side of the East shed by the Children's play area? The new mural looks fantastic! Local artist Laura Hower has done an amazing job brightening up the area and bringing even more beauty to the garden!
We also appreciate the efforts of Rose Roots gardeners Jack Nix and Altuğ Dana, who, on the morning of July 20, worked with Patty Sacks to determine precise locations for three new benches at Westside. While Patty wandered off to water trees and shrubs, much digging ensued for the concrete bench pads. This is a work in progress, but we expect to have all benches installed within the next week or two.
This is Altuğ's first season at the garden. He noted that volunteering for Rose Roots gives him a sense of accomplishment and that one day he will look back with pride that he was able to contribute to building this community space.
